Last week was a scramble for UMass Dartmouth’s women’s soccer as the girls took field on Tuesday, September 27 and Thursday, September 30.
On Tuesday, the girls played at home as Springfield College took home the 2-1 win; however, still making the game memorable at Cressy Field.
The girls still put a spin on the game when midfielder Nicole Starkey-Cox dropped a pass to center midfielder, Erica Farias, which cut the lead in half.
The game was tough but in the 84th minute sophomore goalkeeper, Korina Miguel, punched the ball over the crossbar from Springfield’s Jenacee Bradbury’s 35 yard shot, which kept the girls within the striking distance, even though the visitors defense held firm.
Game highlights were still strong as junior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher made a save on net, and Miguel was a trooper as she took the loss for the team.
Although, as a first decision goalkeeper (of her career) Miguel made an unbelievable nine stops.
One fun fact as it was Homecoming this past weekend, was that the 72 minute goal by Farias against the Pride’s team, was the first since Springfield College won 4-1 on September 20, 1997.
The game appeared to be competition all the way around. “Springfield is a very strong team. They are very good in the air,” said forward Lucy Jensen.
“It took us a while to calm down and play to feet. We came back and scored a late goal, picking up the intensity for the last 30 minutes of the game which ended in us battling pretty hard. They held us off but it ended up being a good game. They are probably the best team we have played.”
Last Thursday, UMass Dartmouth soccer traveled and took field against the Bridgewater State University Bears.
Miguel in the first overtime did not want the game to end as she made three point-blank stops. The girls completed four shots and a few corner kicks during the second overtime; however, the clock struck zero leaving it a 1-1 tie.
Game highlights consisted of a right side shot, 18 yards out, an unassisted score tying the game by midfielder Talia D’Ambruso. For the third time Ambruoso has found the back of the net. All three of her goals as unassisted.
Four of the players, including D’Ambruoso and midfielder, Nicole Starkey-Cox also put the ball to the net throughout the 110 minutes.
Miguel also completed seven total saves in which was only her second full game of the season. This wrapped up to be three in the second half and three in the first overtime period.
According to Farias there is nothing like playing soccer for UMass Dartmouth. “It means a lot to me being a part of the soccer team. These girls have been my family from the start. If it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t even still be at UMass Dartmouth. Being part of the team as a freshman made the transition to college so easy.”
The girls were rained out this weekend as they were supposed to play Rhode Island College; however, the game has been postponed.
