If you’re looking for a great place to eat that’s close to campus and won’t put your bank account on life support, look no further than Max’s, the family-owned burger joint only a minute down State Road!
Max’s is a casual restaurant/bar that serves mainly American dishes like burgers, fries, and wings, although their menu also includes seafood and a few tex/mex options. The atmosphere is cool and comfortable, after a recent expansion in which the owners introduced a bar area with a wide selection of beer and wine, as well as more seating and warm fixtures.
Max’s has weekly deals perfect for students on a tight budget. Every Tuesday is Taco Tuesday, where tacos are $2.50 each. These include traditional beef, pulled pork with homemade onion strings, chicken with a mango-pico salsa, and fish tacos.
Thursdays are Build Your Own Burger days, where any burger on the menu is $4.00 with the purchase of a beer or a medium fountain drink, including custom orders. The expansive signature burger selection is easily a highlight and reason enough to stop buy, let alone for a bargain.
Some of the combinations include The Full Monty with sautéed onions and mushrooms, The Hawaiian with a grilled slice of pineapple, bacon and BBQ sauce, and The Reuben, with pastrami, swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Max’s special sauce.
And finally for the football fans on campus, every Sunday all wings, bone-in and boneless, are 70 cents each, no limit. The chicken is never frozen, crisp and juicy, and comes with a variety of sauces including the normal bunch, as well as lemon pepper, Buff-A-Q, and Suicide sauce.
Starting this Sunday, every Sunday from 12-4, Miller Lite will be sponsoring a Man Cave Giveaway, where each week restaurant patrons can have a beer (or other beverage) and enter to win weekly prizes like T-shirts and other merchandise. At the end of the season, one of the entries will be chosen to win a man cave setup, complete with a recliner, flat screen TV and a cooler.
Max’s is owned and operated by the Steve and Cathy Ginsberg, a SouthCoast local family who also own another business down the street: New York Bagel. Students may recognize that name from the packaging on the bagels available on campus, as New York Bagel has supplied UMass Dartmouth as well as regional hospitals and other institutions for years.
The Ginsbergs have operated New York Bagel for 28 years, and 7 years ago decided to open up a burger joint, and subsequently named it after their son Max, who is currently a student at UMass Dartmouth. Max is a junior business management major, who loves the opportunity to be able to learn about business while running one with his family.
“It’s a whole new experience, it’s really cool to be a part of it now, going to school to get a business degree and being a part of the business. Some stuff I learned from my mother and father growing up, but learning new things along the way is great.”
Max’s is located 405 State Road right outside campus, adjacent to the Starbucks plaza. To learn more information about Max’s, visit their website or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
