Halloween Celebrations on a Budget

By Staff Writer Michaella Lesieur.

Halloween is just around the corner, and who said the holiday is just for kids? There are so many different festivities and activities one can do while sticking to a tight budget.

From family outings at a corn maze to a night with your friends watching old Halloween reruns, the options on how to spend the October holiday are endless. This five-step guide is perfect for all ages.

Halloween By Candle Light:
If you are living on campus, spend the night with your roomies, make a Halloween themed meal and binge watch all your favorite Halloween movies. You have to make sure the legendary Hocus Pocus is on the play list.

You could even turn this into a romantic dinner in or a lady’s night with some of your favorite gals. Pinterest is flooded with so many different Halloween meals. Some favorites include the “jack-o-lantern stuffed peppers” or quesadillas, which appear when doing a quick search under “Halloween Meals.”

Other fun meal items could include the “spooky shepherd’s pie” and for the breakfast lovers Halloween pancakes. I recommend heading over to Pinterest and taking a look for yourself. You never know what you may find.

Carve-A-Pumpkin:
This old family tradition is a fan favorite. It would not be Halloween without carving your favorite pumpkin with your family and friends. You can even create your own contest. If carving pumpkins with three or more people, host a contest and see who can come up with the most creative idea. It is interesting to see what people come up with! I once made a four seasons pumpkin at a local school event with my friend; my favorite part was carving the pineapple for summer.

***Also, if you are someone who loves jack-o-lanterns make sure you check our Roger William Park Zoo’s legendary jack-o-lantern spectacular!! The experience is breathtaking.

Trick- Or- Treat:
For those of you who have cousins or children of your own, consider dressing up with them when you go trick-or-treating. You are never too old to dress up. Plus, it gives you an excuse to go trick-or-treating. Not only is it a fun family memory, but you might get a couple pieces of candy for yourself!

Corn Maze & Hay Ride Adventures
Head on out to a corn maze and put your brain to the test to see how long it takes you to get yourself out of the puzzle. After you are all mazed out take a long hayride through the picturesque views of the fall season. These are great outdoor activities for the fall too. Perfect for families, friends, people visiting from out of town and your roomies.

DIY Costume Contest:
If you have a crafty group of friends, then this is definitely how you should spend your Halloween. It will bring your costume party to the next level. Instead of spending money buying the costume of the year get crafty with it. Have everyone make their own costume using stuff from around the house or their dorm. At the end of the night crown the best female and male winner. FYI, last year I DIYed my own costume and was Mary Poppins, I came in second…

So, as you can see there are so many options on how to spend Halloween and each one will give you a break from all the countless hours of studying and work to sit back and enjoy the night. Happy Halloween!
