Basketball seniors shine on Senior Night

It was Senior Night this past Saturday as both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams hosted Castleton University at the Tripp Athletic Center. The women’s team won 63-52, while the men’s team won 81-65. It also seemed fitting that in both games, the point leaders were seniors. Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass) led the women’s team with 11 points and, 7 rebounds. For the men’s team, Arinze Obiora (Hyde Park, Mass) led the Corsairs with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Examond was joined by junior Ashley Brown (Fairhaven, Mass) and, sophomore Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Ma) who had 10 points each to help contribute to their team’s victory. Brown also tallied 3 assists and 4 blocks which solidified her strong performance Saturday. Together, senior Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, Mass) and junior Kayla McMahon (Hanover, Mass) accounted for 17 of the Corsair’s 63 points.

The team also put up an impressive 14 steals and, 8 blocks. Examond and Brown led the effort in steals while McMahon, Empey, and sophomore Meagan Donovan (Abington, Mass) all put up 2 blocks each. In addition to this, the team also had a total of 32 defensive rebounds.

This was the 5th win of February for the women’s team, improving their overall record to 21-4. The team will await to see the result of the the game between fourth seed UMass Boston and fifth seed Rhode Island College. The loser of that game will take on the Corsairs at the Tripp Athletic Center. Dates and times will be announced later this week.
As for the men’s team, this win was also their 5th win of February putting the team at an overall record of 18-7.

Freshman Adam Seabloom (Lakeville, Mass) had a strong performance this past Saturday, scoring 14 points and grabbing a single rebound in just 14 minutes of play. The team also saw scoring from senior Atakan Akcam (Ankara, Turkey) with 10 points and freshman Sean Leahy (Hanson, Mass) who put up 9 points.

The Corsairs came ready to play both sides of the ball though. Both Obiora and Akcam had 4 steals and a single block each. Not to mention, they combined for a total of 16 defensive rebounds. Junior Marquis Jones (Randolph, Mass) and Leahy also accounted for 4 of the teams total steals.

The Corsair’s now shift their focus to the Little East Conference Playoffs as they host Plymouth State at the Tripp Athletic Center on Tuesday, February 19th. The game will tip-off at 7.P.M.
