UMass Dartmouth men’s lacrosse splits games against Wheaton, Dean

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs Men’s Lacrosse team split games before heading off to spring break. The Corsairs first fell in 10-8 non-league match on March 8th against Wheaton College on the road before bouncing back against Dean College.

The teams finished a hard fought first 15 minutes with a 2-2 tie, but then the Wheaton Lyons scored two goals by sophomore Mike Abramo and senior Josh Talanian (Arlington, Mass.) to double the Corsairs’ score.

The Corsairs fought back however in the first half with a rebuttal of three goals.
Sophomore Sawyer Gibbons (Sandwich, Mass.), scored the final goal of the half with only 17 seconds left on the clock.

The Corsairs came in hot in the second half when first year player Kevin Swenson (Ipswich, Mass.) scored a huge goal within the first five minutes, securing the Corsairs lead at 6-4.

The home Lyons however came charging right back in the third period. Wheaton netted four goals in just a six-minute span, putting the Corsairs down by the same two goals they were leading by just one quarter earlier.

As the fourth and final period began, the Corsairs fought their way to the curtain, and sophomore Josh Souza (Sandwich, Mass.) scored the visitors into a one goal deficit with 10:50 left in the game.

The Lyons weren’t done yet though, as senior CJ Leighton (Falmouth, Mass.) and freshman Alex Berg (Southport, Conn.) scored two goals back-to-back in a 27 second period, now ow pushing their lead back up.

The visiting Corsairs finished out their performance with a goal from junior Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.) with 1:44 left in the game but it was not enough to close the gap.
The Corsairs wouldn’t go off to spring break without a tally in the win column however.
The team won a non-league game against Dean on Monday, March 11th in Franklin Mass., where Junior Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) scored a team-leading four goals.

The Corsairs ended the first quarter of the game in a tie with the Bulldogs until Prozinski scored his second goal of the game to kick of the second quarter and set the stage for an eventual Corsairs victory.

The Corsairs jumped out to a lead after the close first quarter, scoring 7 goals in the second and third quarters. Dean could not keep up with the Corsairs during their hot streak and saw themselves trailing 9-4 heading into the final frame.

Prozinski had his hands all over the box score. He scored two goals in the third period alone, and assisted on freshman Zak Wirsen (Bourne, Mass.) lone goal.

Freshman Tom Lattanzi (Hamilton, Mass.) scored a couple of goals thanks to assists from Rizzo. A final tally by Rizzo in the fourth quarter propelled the Corsairs into their 10-6 victory.

Junior Ted McCaffery (Pepperell, Mass.) made huge stops for the Corsairs in net with a total of eight saves on the day.

Overall the Corsairs outshot the Bulldogs by a 51-23 margin, shooters shoot Corsairs.
The Corsairs are idle until March 20th when they will host MIT in another non-league match at Cressy Field at 4:00 pm.
