Despite the unfortunately rainy and windy conditions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Men’s Golf team won the Lafrance Hospitality Invitational Championship over the past weekend.
The team was led by Senior Tom Sheran who shot a two-over 74 in the final round of the championship to secure the 2019 Lafrance Hospitality Invitational men’s squad title.
Alongside Sheran was freshman Curtis Merritt, as the two posted identical two-day total scores of 154 that tied them for seventh place overall in the 75 competitor field.
Merritt opened up the weekend with a 76, then finished just behind Sheran on the second and final round of play shooting six-over 78.
Behind the pairing was Senior Jackson Mitchell, who finished in a tie for 19th place at the championships with a two-day total of 159.
Meanwhile, Senior Austin Alves and Freshman Jack McDonald rounded out the back end of the UMass Dartmouth Men’s Golf team with respective total scores of 160 and 161, earning them respectable ties for 22nd and 25th place.
The Corsairs team total score of 623 bested runner-up Husson’s total of 628 by five strokes. Roger Williams University and Springfield College came another five strokes behind Husson, tying for third place with identical team total scores of 633.
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hosted the Lafrance Hospitality Invitational Championship at Allendale Country Club, and for the first time in six years, the team won a home hosted event.
Despite their victory over the weekend, the Corsairs did not find themselves in the winner’s position for the totality of the season.
The Spring Cup Series, a season-long competition that involved events such as this one that were hosted by Johnson & Wales University, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and Rhode Island College, was won by the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales after the Wildcats finished in a tie with Western New England for eighth place in this weekend’s final standings.
