August 31st started the tennis team’s season. From August 31st to September 10th, the team has seen four wins.
This season, the team has eight players and their coaches, head coach Doug Chapman and assistant coaches, Peter Holt and Jordan Beals.
To start the season, the team went to Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts, and dominated the field 7-0.
Graduate student Emma Collings and sophomore Maddie Gonzales played No. 1 doubles. They won their match 6-3. Junior Zuri Walters and sophomore Sofia Beltran swept No. 2 doubles 6-1.
All six singles matches were won (one by default), leading the Corsairs to start on a high note this season. No. 1 singles was played by Gonzalez, who dominated the first set 6-2 and the second one 6-1.
Walters swept singles No. 2 6-0 for the first set and 6-1 on the second. Similarly, Collings won No. 3 6-2 and 6-3.
Beltran triumphed 7-6 and 6-3. Saige Croce, a sophomore, was the only player who played three sets, losing the first set 6-7 but coming back strong for the remaining sets, winning 6-2 and 10-5.
Their second win was on September 3rd at their first home match. The team was faced against Lesley University and won 5-4.
The first highlight comes from the No. 2 doubles match with Gonzalez and Croce, who dominated 8-3.
Four singles matches were won. No. 1 was Collings winning 6-0 and 6-2. Beltran captured a win in their No. 4 singles match 6-0 and 6-1.
No. 5 had Croce on top the whole match with a 6-3 and 6-1 win. Sophomore Eren Adamiak had a clean sweep of No. 6 doubles, dominating both sets 6-0.
The Corsair Game of the Week was the match where the team had their third dominating win.
Vermont State University was their competitor. Corsair’s won 7-2.
Two double matches had stellar matches. Gonzalez and Collings won their No. 1 doubles 8-0 and the Walters-Beltran duo dominated 8-4.
The team saw five single wins, starting with No. 1, Gonzalez. She won her sets 6-2 and 6-4. Her doubles partner earlier in the day, Collings won No. 3 6-2, 6-1.
Both No. 2 doubles team members won singles, like the No. 1 duo. Walters dominated 6-1 and 6-2, and Beltran swept both sets 6-1.
No. 5 match was Croce, who had a stellar 6-2, 6-0 win.
Clark University and the Corsairs went head to head on September 10. Corsairs prevailed, winning 4-3.
Two doubles and three singles matches saw success.
No.1 doubles, Walters and Beltran won 6-3, while Gonzalez and Croce won No. 2 doubles 6-4.
The first single match with Gonzalez was the only match that went up to three sets. The first set was 6-2, the second was an unfortunate loss, 4-6, but the third set was another success at 6-2.
Walters and Croce held the remaining wins of the day, with Walters playing No. 2 singles 6-1 and 7-5 and Croce playing singles No. 4 7-5 and 6-2.
As of September 14, the final win was at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. The Corsairs went home 5-4.
Gonzalez and Collings dominated doubles 8-1.
No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles all were triumphant. Gonzalez had a clean sweep in both sets, 6-0. Walters saw success in No. 2, coming home with 6-4 and 7-5.
Beltran closed with three sets. She won the first set 6-1, lost the second set 1-6, and came 6-1 in the third set.
