In 2023, Brazilian national Danelo Cavalcente, a convicted murderer, was captured 14 days after escaping from a Pennsylvania prison in September. His escape, combined with his ability to evade hundreds of law enforcement officers for two weeks, left communities on edge and raised questions about prison security and public safety.

Cavalcente, 34, has been serving a life sentence without parole for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend, Deborah Brandao, in 2021.

Prosecutors state he stabbed her 38 times in front of her two young children after she threatened to expose his involvement in another killing in Brazil. After his conviction in August of 2023, Cavalcente was sent to Chester County prison while he awaited transfer to a state correctional facility. 

In December of 2020, Brandao filed a protection from abuse order on Cavalcente. This is different from a general restraining order because in a protection from abuse order, the restrained person is an intimate partner, family member, or someone who lives with the protected person. 

According to the police in Brazil, Cavalcente was a wanted man since 2017. While little is known about his life before coming to the US, some officials have described him as a former member of a street gang. 

The murder in Brazil stemmed from an argument over an alleged debt for the repairs made to a car. After shooting the victim six times, Cavalcente stole the man’s cell phone and fled the scene in a car. 

Following the shooting, he then fled to Puerto Rico before arriving in the US illegally. 

While Cavalcente awaited transfer, he managed to pull off a bold and astonishing escape. Surveillance footage shows him “crab walking” up two walls separated by a 5-foot hallway to escape the Chester County prison. He then had to squeeze through razor wire and run across a roof.

This escape was identical to another inmate who had escaped from Chester County earlier that year, Igor Bolte. The prison’s failure to address this known security flaw drew immediate criticism from the public. 

For the next two weeks, Pennsylvania became the center of a massive manhunt. Hundreds of state troopers, federal agents, police dogs, and helicopters combed dense woods, suburban neighborhoods, and rural farmlands. 

Authorities warned residents to stay vigilant, lock their doors, and secure their vehicles. Schools in the area were temporarily closed, and roadblocks were set up as sightings began to pour in from scared locals. 

Cavalcente was elusive and resourceful; he managed to steal food, clothes, and a van. He changed his appearance by shaving his beard and hair. He even managed to slip past a police perimeter but was caught on a doorbell camera miles away from where search teams were originally focusing. 

Law enforcement said that Cavalcente survived by moving at night and staying hidden during the day, taking advantage of his familiarity with rural environments. “He was desperate but determined,” said Pennsylvania state police Lieutenant George Bivens. 

The breakthrough finally came on the morning of September 13, 2023, when a DEA heat-sensing aircraft detected a moving figure in a heavily wooded area. Tactical teams quietly surrounded the area overnight. When daylight finally broke, K-9 units and heavily armed officers closed in, catching Cavalcente off guard. As he tried to crawl away through the underbrush, a police dog named Yoda overpowered him. 

Photographs were soon released of a handcuffed, mud-covered Cavalcente, wearing a Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt he had stolen. Authorities said he was also found with a stolen rifle but did not fire it. 

Cavalcente was then transferred to SCI Phoenix, a maximum-security state prison near Philadelphia, where officials vowed there would never be a repeat of his previous escape. The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections immediately launched an internal review of Chester County, and officials fired the tower guard who failed to notice his escape. 

For residents of Chester County, the ordeal left lasting stress. Many described that they were living in fear, unable to sleep or let their children outside. “We were terrified,” said one resident. “You never knew if he was hiding in your backyard.” 

State and local officials pledged to improve the prison’s infrastructure, surveillance, and staffing, hoping to prevent similar incidents. 

As for Cavalcnete, his days of freedom have come to an end. He now remains behind bars under 24-hour surveillance. But his story from a small town in Brazil to an escape that gripped the small town in Pennsylvania will be remembered as one of the most dramatic fugitive hunts of the decade.
