In an amazing start to their season, the Corsair women’s basketball team found two back-to-back wins against Bridgewater State and Southern Maine.
Coming into this week’s events riding a three-game winning streak, UMassD had two very important, conference-relevant games lining the schedule. The first of which, slated for Tuesday, November 19th, against Bridgewater state, concluded with a final score of 66-62 in favor of the Corsairs. The second of which, against Southern Maine, on Saturday November 23rd, ended in another UMassD win at a final score of 74-72.
The first game against Bridgewater State could theoretically be divided into halves, with the Corsairs heavily outscoring the Bears in the first half, and the Bears retaliating against a complacent Corsair crew in the second. It was just a 4-point difference that allowed the Corsair Women to be able to take their first victory of the week.
Sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro made a double-double effort in order to score 20 points and make a total of 11 rebounds, contributing heavily to the UMassD win. Her outstanding efforts allowed the Corsairs to take full control over the court in their narrow victory over the Bears.
The Corsairs demonstrated a more consistent effort throughout their second match against Southern Maine, outscoring the Huskies through three of four quarters, albeit narrowly. Jordan Moretti lead her team to victory by scoring a total of 21 points and 5 assists, ultimately leading to the week-ending win.
To conclude the week of Thanksgiving, the Corsairs have one final game against Roger Williams, scheduled for Tuesday, November 26th, slated to start at 6:00 pm.
