Amazon Prime’s hit series, The College Tour, is filming right here on our campus, bringing excitement and an opportunity for students and the campus community to showcase what makes UMassD stand out.
The series, known for its in-depth, student-led exploration of campuses nationwide, gives prospective students a true feel of college life without leaving their homes. The College Tour was created by Emmy-nominated producer Alex Boylan, who is known for his work on reality and travel shows.
The show has been going strong for 14 seasons, providing in-depth experiences across colleges, big and small, including the University of Connecticut, the University of Rhode Island, Iowa State, UMass Boston, and many more.
Since the first episode’s release back in 2020, he and his team designed the show with prospective students in mind, especially those who may not have the chance to tour colleges in person.
By following different campuses, The College Tour makes it easier for students to imagine themselves in various college settings. Each episode focuses on a single college, using real students to tell stories about the programs, activities, and culture of that campus.
Now, with the cameras set up on our quad, residence halls, and classrooms, UMass Dartmouth is ready to share its story with the world.
By appearing on The College Tour, UMassD joins a list of esteemed institutions, raising its profile and potentially attracting even more students who connect with the college’s values, programs, and community.
Not only that but once the episode is released on Amazon Prime, UMass Dartmouth will have a new global audience. Future students, families, and alumni from all over the world will have a chance to see our campus and hear stories directly from our students.
The production process involves carefully planned shots, retakes, and sometimes a bit of improvisation. It is a unique opportunity to see the magic behind creating a show, from setting up equipment to speaking with producers and directors.
The crew’s presence has sparked curiosity, with students gathering to watch or participate as extras. I have been able to speak to the show’s host, Alex Boylan, briefly about filming on campus and why he and his team have chosen UMass Dartmouth for the upcoming season.
The Interview
Why did you choose UMass Dartmouth for filming?
Alex: I’m from Massachusetts. I lived in Georgetown. Dartmouth is a beautiful area, and I just love New England, so it was the perfect place to film.
What inspired this series?
Alex: I have a niece who’s college-aged, and I was inspired by her college search to explore different campuses and see what each community was like.
How has it been filming on campus?
Alex: It’s been amazing. This campus has amazing people and amazing programs. We’ve heard so many great stories from students that we’re really excited to share.
Was there anything in particular that drew you to Dartmouth?
Alex: We were impressed with the fact this university has 110 different programs for students to choose from and the social mobility that this campus can provide to its students.
When the episode goes live, it will not only serve as a recruitment tool but also as a reminder of the shared experiences and connections that make UMass Dartmouth so special.
The episode is set to be released around the beginning of 2025, and it’s sure to bring pride and excitement to everyone involved. Keep an eye out for familiar faces and spots on campus!
