In the early morning hours of Saturday, October 4, 2025, a horrific incident happened in Houston, Texas that shocked the community and raised profound questions about mental health, family dynamics, and gun violence.

A 31-year-old mother, Oninda Romelus, was arrested and charged after allegedly shooting four of her children in her car in Angleton, Texas, killing two and wounding the other two.

Romelus is a former paternity court contestant on a courtroom TV series that focused on family-related issues, ranging from paternity tests to DNA questions. The show aired its last episode a little over a year ago.

Romelus’ episode aired nearly 12 years ago when she was allegedly involved with two other men at the same time and was unaware of who her now thirteen-year-old son was.

According to statements by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s office, deputies responded just before 5am to a call from Romelus, who asked police to meet her at a gas station near a common highway.

Upon arrival, they found four children with gunshot wounds in the car. Unfortunately, two were found dead: a 13-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl. The other two, an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, were flown to a Houston hospital and are currently in stable condition.

Romelus has been charged with 2 counts of murder and 2 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Her bond has been set at 14 million dollars.

Authorities believe the shooting occurred inside the car while Romelus was driving, yet this claim is still under investigation at the time of writing.

Authorities uncovered additional troubling information during a search of the family’s home in Porter, Texas. They found multiple social security cards and other identification documents that had different names on them. There were also treasury checks addressed to the home that were under various identities. This has triggered questions about possible identity fraud and launched a whole other investigation.

Court records show that Romelus has a previous conviction from 2022 for driving under the influence of drugs. Beyond that, little is known about her recent history or state of mind leading up to the shootings.

According to different court documents and law-enforcement, when Romelus was asked why she called 911, she responded with “instead of them doing it to me, I’m gonna do it to them.”

What is Still Unknown

The official motive of this crime remains unclear, as the authorities say the investigation is still ongoing. Regarding mental health considerations, authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive related to mental illness. Reported statements suggest possible psychosis or crisis. While the call was made from a gas station, deputies believe that the shooting took place earlier in the vehicle at a different location.

The two injured children are in stable condition, but their physical and emotional long-term recovery is unknown. There is also the question of what role social services may have played in this incident.

Given the variety of documents found in the home, investigators are looking into whether any agencies were involved or had any prior knowledge of violence or abuse that could have potentially prevented this tragedy.

What Comes Next

Romelus is in custody as she awaits further legal proceedings, but her defense team and the prosecution will eventually bring more details to light. Ideally, social services may review what role, if any, they could have played in preventing the tragedy. The recovery of the surviving children will be a long and difficult process.

While each detail in the case of Onida Romelus is shocking within itself, the deeper questions it raises about parent-child relationships, mental health, hidden instability, and firearm access are what continues to linger. This is no simple crime story; it is a moment for national reflection about how to better identify, intervene, and protect children when the trusted adult becomes the threat.

Cases where a parent kills their child are rare but deeply disturbing. They challenge our standing assumptions about safety, parental duty, and vulnerabilities within domestic life.

This tragic incident highlights a larger issue about gun access and safety and how firearms in the hands of the distressed can very quickly lead to tragedies.
