What a week it is to be a Corsair on the girl’s field hockey team, as the ladies took home two wins over the past week.
“Our next couple of games are all conference games, which is a huge deal,” said junior nursing student and forward Mary Brown.
“We definitely need strong wins to improve our placement in our standings in the Little East Conference (LEC). As long as we all focus and work together we should have no problem coming out of this next week with the wins!”
The girls played Mount Ida on Tuesday October 3, in a close match 4-3. As eyes look over to senior Erin Kish, as she made her first ever hat trick and the girls were in a five-minute overtime, bringing the team the win.
Flashing back to the game on Thursday October 5 against Saint Joseph’s the girls struggled to take the win losing 1-4. However, kudos goes to team player Allison Burke who accomplished 21 saves, which was her second highest total in three years.
It is all about team work when playing the field. “We are an incredible team who plays amazing when we are working together,” said Brown.
“We have off days we’re we lose our cohesiveness and those are the days we struggle. However, after a tough loss, we are usually able to talk it out, figure out what went wrong, and come out stronger for the following game.”
Which is exactly what the girls did when looking to Saturday’s game on October 7, the girls came back and took the win against Westfield State, 2-1. In just minutes junior Ciara Anderson carried the girls to victory with a corner goal.
The girls show pride in representing their school. “I am very proud to represent UMass Dartmouth on and off the field. I have an incredible love for this school and anything I can do to gain positive attention for it I will,” said Brown.
“It’s definitely something you think of while playing, you want to represent UMD in the best way possible.”
Saturday’s game started off slow with no points during the first half; however, that quickly turned going into the second half when in two minutes Brown and sophomore Katrina Perry stepped up their game, by sending the ball into a driving shot to the right corner of the net.
Looking to the numbers we would like to congratulate Brown for her third goal of this season and Anderson of her second goal of the season.
One fun fact is that the UMass Dartmouth girls field hockey teams keeps their winning streak against the Owls to a full ten since 2008.
Team building plays a huge factor both on and off the field.
“We spend a lot of time together throughout the season. From the second we move in for preseason in August, we are spending the entire day together from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for 2 weeks straight,” said Brown.
“Then once regular season comes around we are spending hours every day together at practice, team dinners, bus rides, and games. Not to mention the team bonding activities that we do on top of it all! We’re a very close team so spending time together isn’t a chore, we always have fun!”
Our UMass Dartmouth teams dedicate their hard work and appreciate being able to play the sport they love.
“It’s an honor to be able to play field hockey at the collegiate level! Every player on this team is so dedicated that it’s fun to show up every day and work hard to be the best team we can be,” said Brown proudly.

And if you can’t make that game, don’t worry, the lady Corsairs have four more games this month, at Roger Williams, home against Keene State and Simmons, and finally away at Wellesley.
