Three Corsairs earn medals at the New England Division III Championships

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the New England Division III Championships on Saturday. The men competed at Middlebury College while the women competed at Springfield College.

First-year Moisse Irizarry continued his dominance on the track field on Saturday. He was the only UMass Dartmouth Corsair to place on the podium on Saturday. Irizarry finished third in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.44 seconds, missing the number one spot by only two-tenths of a second. Sophomore George Papoulis was behind Irizarry with a time of 1:55.75 that earned him a sixth-place finish.

In the 1000-meter run, sophomore Travis Dolcine finished with a time of 2:35.1 that earned him 8th place. First-year Bruno Pires finished 12th in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:57.54. Although he fell short of the top-10 in the competition, Pires’ time puts him 9th for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s all-time 800-meter race records. Junior Alex MacMillan came in 14th place in the 200-meter dash with a 23.01 finished.

At Springfield College, Taylor Walsh posted her new personal best in the 1000-meter run, edging out her time from the Little East Conference Championship last week when she finished 15th with a time of 3:08.16.

In the field, the UMass Dartmouth throwers continued on their already solid season. Senior Jared Louf-Woods earned a first-place finish in the weight throw, tossing a distance of 19.14 meters to defeat his next closest competitor by over two feet. At Springfield College, sophomore Mackenzie Garvey just barely fell short of placing on the podium as her distance of 11.60 meters was two feet shy of third place in the event.

Junior Joao Bapitsta secured bronze in the high-jump event which his jump height of 1.96 meters.

The final opportunity to qualify for the NCA Division III Indoor Championships on March 10th in Birmingham, Alabama will be coming on March 2-3 at Tufts University in the Last Chance Qualifier.
