Women’s soccer season calls it a wrap

By Staff Writer Michaella Lesieur.

It was a great season for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women’s soccer team as they concluded their year on October 30, 2018. Over the course of the season the girls worked together, scored a lot and most importantly had fun.

This was the ladies eighth conference post season appearance. They ended their season with a 7-8-5 overall. The women’s team fell to Southern Main 3-0 in the Little East Quarter Finals away.

The Huskies kept the goals rolling scoring every quarter and keeping UMass out of goal. Overall, UMass Dartmouth outshot Maine 13-12, which resulted in five corner kicks for both teams during the contest.

As we flash back to the girl’s season opening, their first game was August 31, 2018 as they took home a 2-0 win against Fredonia. What a way to open the season playing home at the legendary Cressy Field. Spotlights looked over to freshman Kaitlyn Bernier and junior Ella Rath who fired goals into the net in the second half.

The Corsair’s kept their winning streak going for the second game as they played against Albertus Magnus. Taking on similar accounts UMass won 2-0 in the second half. Senior Courtney Hewitt and Bernier brought in the goals within only 17 plus minutes left.

Fast forward to the next four games as the girls had to fight a little bit harder to land a tie against Bridgewater State, leaving the score board reading 1-1. The next couple of games the girls fell to the Salem State, Springfield and Connecticut Colony. During the September 13, 2018 game sophomore Jaimee O’Brien accomplished her own record as goalie. O’Brien tied her career-high with a beautiful 11 saves.

However, the ladies were not just going to stand back and let this happen as they took back their win against Plymouth State on September 15. With winning the game 1-0 the Corsairs were able to iron out their home record with 2-2.

As their season progressed the ladies had their fair share of wins, ties and losses which kept the season on its toes. During the October 20, 2018 game the girls won 2-1. Rath scored two perfect goals in the first half for the upcoming Little East Conference.

Overall, the 2018 women’s soccer team had a wonderful season and stands to make UMass Dartmouth proud. Congratulations to all the seniors and the girls for a job well done. We look forward to seeing what you have in store for next year.
