Both Men’s and Woman’s basketball teams were in action this Saturday against Eastern Connecticut.
Two solid performances from the teams lead to some exceptional games and more importantly, two amazing victories.
The Men’s Corsair basketball team just barely edged out Eastern Connecticut, winning by a single point, 69-68.
You could only imagine the intensity of such a close game.
With 14 seconds left, sophomore Jake Ashworth lifted UMass Dartmouth to victory with a late basket.
Leading scores included Senior, Atakan Akcam with 16 points and 6 rebounds.
Arinze Obiora lead the team with 15 points and 5 boards for the winners.
Ashworth finished the game with 12 points. Freshman, Marcus Azor put up 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
The men played a great game, using the paint to their advantage and lead the conference with a 43 total rebounds.
The Lady Corsairs hustled and played a great game against Eastern Connecticut as well, defeating them 73-55.
With their 26th win, they still remain at the top of their conference.
Their top scorer on the night was Ashley Brown with 18 points.
Senior, Nakira Examond led the team with the highest number of rebounds and Danyel Gonzalez with the most assists.
Freshman Jordan Moretti, added 12 points and 4 rebounds while Examond landed her 10th double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
She was the second leading scorer with 10 solid points.
While Senior Jess Korzec, scored 8 points.
First year Jessica Carroll added 8 points while freshman Shaelyn Carreiro contributed 7 points and 5 rebounds.
Eastern Connecticut scored 11 out of the last 14 points to close out the last quarter but the Corsairs swept have swept the season series for the second straight year.
Both teams could not handle the ball very well, recording 19 turnovers each.
The Corsairs however, used the paint to their advantage and almost doubled Eastern Connecticut’s total rebounds.
UMass Dartmouth shot 43 percent from the field overall, knocking down eight three pointers in the process to secure the victory.
Both team’s next game will be at Plymouth State on Saturday, February 9th.
The women will tip off first at 1:00 pm with the men following later in the afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
