Are you thinking of joining Greek life at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth?

With fourteen different organizations on campus to choose from, you can find one with charity work, social and career connections, and life-long friends that fit your interests.

With Fall recruitment wrapping up and Spring recruitment not too far out of sight, members from different organizations are coming together to share how they believe Greek life has benefited them throughout their years at UMass Dartmouth.

With numbers being lower than ever, these organizations are hoping that they will be able to combat the negative stereotypes surrounding Greek life. Their goal is to show students that Greek life is more than just about partying; it is about helping its members succeed in school and prepare for life outside of school.

“Greek life has the ability to expose people to novel situations and interactions that make them learn and adjust to new things,” said Zack Walton, a graduate student at UMass Dartmouth and member of Chi Phi.

He added, “It’s also helped me to develop my social ability to where I am comfortable in many social settings and situations where problems arise and need to be addressed. Planning events and interactions is something that has greatly helped me to appreciate the real-world concept of diversifying your skills, as now I am much more adept at solving challenges and getting things done than I was before Greek life.”

Roisin Mullet, senior and member of Phi Sigma Sigma, agrees that joining Greek life was “the best decision” that she had ever made.

“It helped me gain a sense of responsibility in taking on leadership roles,” she continued, “It helped strengthen my time management and communication skills, which are extremely important as I graduate in the Spring and become an Emergency Room Nurse.”

Alyssa Hart, a senior member of Alpha Sigma Tau, wants to fight the negative stereotypes of Greek life in movies and culture.

“Serving on countless committees, publicly speaking on a weekly basis, planning and scheduling both formal and informal events on and off campus, learning proper business etiquette… have given me the confidence, connections, and a variety of skills and assets I’ll have with me after graduation,” said Hart.

Not only are these organizations helping their members prepare for life outside of college, but they also are a great way to get involved with the surrounding community both on and off campus. Greek life organizations come together and host various social events such as apple picking, movie nights, game nights, and much more to strengthen their bonds.

There are also many opportunities to get involved off campus as many organizations are committed to their philanthropy.

Every year, most of the sororities participate in the breast cancer walk. The organizations host beach and campus clean-ups, bake sales, participate in gifts to give, and continue searching for new ways to give back to their community.
