It was September 9, 2024 when we lost the great voice actor and legend James Earl Jones.
He was notoriously known for voicing Darth Vader and Mufasa, both of whom are legendary characters that could only have been carried out through a booming and deep voice like Jones’s.
His death came as a shock to fans of both the Star Wars universe and The Lion King movies, with many sharing their condolences and deep sadness.
To truly understand what we have lost, we must appreciate what we once had first. Jones brought something to this world that no other person could.
Born in Arkabutla, Mississippi in 1931 and starting from humble beginnings, Jones started off in college as a pre-med major and eventually served in the Korean War as an officer. It was only slightly after his service that he realized he wanted to pursue a career in acting, starting out on Broadway by taking part in various shows like Shakespeare in the Park including Othello, Hamlet, Coriolanus, and King Lear.
According to The New York Times, Jones did a lot over his many years, stating, “Mr. Jones was a rock. He once appeared in 18 plays in 30 months. He often made a half-dozen films a year, in addition to his television work.” However, his talents weren’t officially noticed until 1977 with the infamous release of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, and the low and menacing voice of Darth Vader was first heard on screen.
Instantly, the effects of Darth and subsequently Jones’s voice were recognized by all that were fans of the Star Wars trilogy. He managed to give the character a sort of intensity and power solely through the capacity of his voice.
He came back for every movie in the trilogy, including A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983). He was even hilariously included in an episode of The Big Bang Theory, interacting with the main character Sheldon Cooper by sharing their interest in the Star Wars franchise.
Star Wars is not the only project that Jones worked on. One of his other most commonly known characters that he voiced was Mufasa from The Lion King (1994).
Again, his voice gave the animated lion character a sense of fatherly care and kindness, a stark contrast from the fearsome and evil voice of Darth Vader, showing the great range his voice could achieve.
He later reprised the role in 2019, when John Favreau recreated the movie in a hyper-realistic fashion, though ensuring that “Jones’s lines from the original film remained mostly the same,” according to his Wikipedia.
Jones starred in plenty of other movies such as The Hunt for Red October, Conan the Barbarian, The Sandlot, and many more in addition to various TV shows.
When word of his unfortunate passing reached the people he worked with closely, many had positive things to say on his behalf.
Kathleen Kennedy told StarWars.com, “James Earl Jones is one of the most versatile and talented actors of our time, with an iconic body of work across film, stage and television.” George Lucas also put out a statement saying “For nearly half a century he was Darth Vader, but the secret to it all is he was a beautiful human being.”
It is extremely saddening to lose such an amazing person, but it was a privilege to have been able to bear witness to such talent form Jones. We saw his skill unfurl in the cinematic universe both on the big screen and on the stage.
It is truly astonishing to see how one person can have such a profound effect on so many people and in so many ways. We can only hope that everyone can learn something from Jones’s life and will remember his legacy fondly and share his memory through generations.
