What started out as a civil meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance ended in chaos.

Zelensky initially visited the White House on February 28th with the intention of amicably discussing and potentially signing a new mineral deal with the U.S. The agreement would have essentially allowed the U.S. to share Ukraine’s rare mineral wealth in exchange for U.S. aid to Ukraine for the war against Russia.

However, all did not go according to plan when a heated argument between leaders erupted, causing the meeting to end abruptly and for the remainder of Zelensky’s White House visit to be canceled.

What exactly prompted this quarrel?

The first 40 minutes of the Oval Office meeting went relatively smoothly aside from a few comments made towards the Ukrainian president, the first one being about his attire.

Zelensky wore a black military style cut shirt and pants, which contrasted from the suits worn by the U.S. president and vice president.

When Zelensky arrived outside the Oval Office, Trump greeted him with a sarcastic jab at his clothing, saying “Oh, you’re all dressed up,” before shaking his hand.

A reporter later asked why the president of Ukraine was not wearing a suit in the United State’s highest office.

Zelensky responded in English, saying “I will wear a costume after this war will finish, yes. Maybe something like yours, yes, maybe something better. I don’t know, we will see. Maybe something cheaper. Thank you.”

The meeting only got more tense from there.

Vance first criticized Biden’s administration on the handling of the war and implied that Trump’s diplomacy was what was going to end the war.

For four years, the United States of America, we had a president who stood up at press conferences and talked tough about Vladimir Putin, and then Putin invaded Ukraine and destroyed a significant chunk of the country. The path to peace and the path to prosperity is, maybe, engaging in diplomacy. We tried the pathway of Joe Biden, of thumping our chest and pretending that the president of the United States’ words mattered more than the president of the United States’ actions. What makes America a good country is America engaging in diplomacy. That’s what President Trump is doing.

Zelensky challenged the validity of Vance’s statement, claiming that from 2014 to 2022, the U.S. did not practice diplomacy nor stop Putin from killing his people. He mentioned the multiple ceasefire deals that were violated, ending with, “What kind of diplomacy, JD, are you speaking about? What do you mean?”

This question was followed by Vance reprimanding Zelensky, calling him disrespectful. “I’m talking about the kind of diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country. Mr. President, with respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media.”

While the argument initially began between Vance and Zelensky, Trump and Zelensky later butted heads, too, when Zelesnky said that the war between Ukraine and Russia had the potential to impact the U.S. Read a section of the argument below the transcript provided by Associated Press

Zelensky: “First of all, during the war, everybody has problems, even you. But you have a nice ocean and don’t feel it now. But you will feel it in the future. God bless –”

Trump: “You don’t know that. You don’t know that. Don’t tell us what we’re going to feel. We’re trying to solve a problem. Don’t tell us what we’re going to feel.”

Zelensky: “I’m not telling you. I am answering these questions.”

Trump: “Because you’re in no position to dictate that. You are in no position to dictate what we’re going to feel. We’re going to feel very good.”

Zelensky: “You will feel influenced.”

Trump: “We are going to feel very good and very strong.”

Zelensky: “I am telling you. You will feel influenced.”

Trump: “You’re, right now, not in a very good position. You’ve allowed yourself to be in a very bad position –”

Zelensky: “From the very beginning of the war —”

Trump: “You’re not in a good position. You don’t have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards.”

Zelensky: “I’m not playing cards. I’m very serious, Mr. President. I’m very serious.”

Trump: “You’re playing cards. You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You’re gambling with World War III.”

Trump ultimately decided that Zelensky was “not in a place to negotiate, before the Ukranian leaders were asked to leave the Oval Office.

The mineral deal was not signed, Zelensky’s planned speech at a university was canceled, and a scheduled joint conference between the leaders was scrapped.

Many republicans have rallied behind Trump, like GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno, who took to posting on X to show his support.

Other democratic leaders worry about the Oval Office meeting and its influence on the global perception of the United States.

The Rhode Island Democrat said the day’s “cruel and callous display does great harm to U.S. standing in the world. Trump and Vance are communicating to the world that the United States is not to be trusted. Adversaries and allies alike will take note.”

Ultimately, the tense dispute has definitely raised concerns about the hopes of reaching a peaceful solution between nations, and of the fate of future relations between Ukraine and the U.S.
