Rafael Caro Quintero is a known Mexican Drug Lord who has been the leader of the Guadalajara Cartel—until now.

As of February 27th, 2025, Quintero was extradited to the US along with “28 other fugitive cartel members” according to video evidence provided by CNN.

What is Quintero charged with? The Murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique Kiki Camarena Salazar.

How does he plead? Not guilty.

The Guadalajara Cartel was established during the peak of the drug pushing empires, most of which were planted in Mexico where they would move their product to the United States through any means necessary.

Eventually, Mexico took up an antidrug policy and began coordinated attacks with the aid of US DEA agents like Salazar.

This whole event, including the torturing and subsequent killing of the agent in 1985, was featured and dramatized in the Netflix series Narcos.

Quintero has been captured twice and is only now, after 40 years, being charged in an American court for the death of the agent so long ago.

As you may imagine, this is going to be a very tough case to win in. Quintero is getting his trial in Brooklyn, NY, and it is expected that is where the now-deceased agent will get his justice.

As part of the FBI’s top ten most wanted people, Quintero has a lot of work to do to make the court believe his highly improbable claims.

On top of this, the White House has claimed him to be “one of the most evil cartel bosses in the world.”

It can be seen as a ploy to get more time out of the court trial than what is expected. In fact, his “defense attorney, Michael Vitaliano, told the court his client has a heart condition and needs medication…” as reported by CNN.

Quintero gave a comment on his behavior after he was released from prison in 2013. Quintero reportedly said that, “I was a drug trafficker 23 years ago, and now I’m not, and I won’t ever be again.”

He was eventually arrested again in 2022 when he lost his appeal to avoid extradition to the US in 2021.

Coincidentally, Quintero is being held in the same detention facility as Sean “Diddy” Combs.

This is not the only win for the DEA and the US. Along with Quintero, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, former leader of the Juarez Cartel, was also brought to the US and similarly pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

As mentioned earlier, it was also known that there were 28 other people along with Quintero that made it to the US. All of these people are, according to the US Department of Justice, members of various terrorist and drug cartels.

As for Quintero, the DEA is taking his arrival and trial as a certified win for the department. As reported by The Associated Press, “more than 100 Drug Enforcement Administration agents and other federal officials filled a large ceremonial courtroom.”

Overall, this is a major victory for justice and a major victory for the DEA. The DEA have put out statements regarding the trial of the drug lords showing a combined strength and perseverance in their efforts to protect and serve.

Frank A. Tarentino III gave a speech regarding the extradition, saying “There is no border we will not cross, and there is no criminal that can escape the reach of the DEA and the rule of law of the United States of America.”

As of now, neither of the defendant’s attorneys have given any comments on the situation, and neither have the defendants themselves, but it is likely that the full extent of the law is to be used upon those who have committed crimes against the US.
