A Grammy’s to remember

By Staff Writer Benjamin Pfeffer

The Grammy’s this year happened Sunday, February 10 at 8:00pm. As always, there was plenty of controversy, plenty of crazy, and featured New England Patriots presenting an award.

Female artists dominated in the number of prizes won. However, Kendrick Lamar held the most nominations of the night with a total of eight, but only went on to win one.
Significant winners included:

Album of the Year: Kacey Musgraves, “Golden Hour”
Record of the Year: Childish Gambino, “This is America”
Song of the Year: Childish Gambino, “This is America”
Best New Artist: Dua Lipa
Best Pop Vocal Album: Ariana Grande, “Sweetener”
Best Rap Song: Drake, “God’s Plan”
Best Rap Album: Cardi B, Invasion of Privacy
Best R&B Album: H.E.R., “H.E.R.”
Music Video/Film: Childish Gambino, “This is America”
Best Pop Solo Performance: Lady Gage, “Joanne” (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?)
Two members of the Patriots were invited to present the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Julian Edelman, who recently had his beard shaven by Ellen, and Devin McCourty presented the award to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for “Shallow.”
Kacey Musgraves and Childish Gambino tied for the overall victory of the night with each of them winning four awards that Sunday night, despite Kendrick Lamar having multiple nominations more than each of the two.

Now for the controversial parts of the night, starting with the most controversial topic.
Mac Miller’s parents were invited to the awards, as Mac Miller passed away last year. However, while many expected Miller to win, they gave the award to Cardi B.
Ariana Grande, Mac Miller’s ex-girlfriend, was very upset about this, but she wasn’t at the award show, so she just used twitter to express her anger about the situation. She tweeted:
“trash.”
“literal bullshit”
“bullshit”
She replied to a tweet that said: “Y’all invite Mac’s parents out and y’all didn’t give him an award are y’all DUMB?”
“this. this is what I meant. karen was gonna have a green suit made.”
“he slept in the studio for two months.”
Ariana then clarified that she wasn’t saying that Cardi didn’t deserve it, but it was wrong to invite Mac’s parents out for nothing.
“nothing to do w [Cardi]. good for her. i promise. i’m sorry.”
“she’s not [trash] at all and that’s not what i meant and u know that”
Ariana, and many others, were fine with the fact that Mac didn’t win an award, but if he wasn’t going to win an award then they shouldn’t have invited his parents.

Another controversial topic was when Dua Lipa won her award for best New Artist.
When Dua Lipa made her speech after winning the award she threw shade at the Grammy president’s past comments. The president is Recording Academy President Neil Portnow. Portnow was criticized last year after saying women needed to “step up” if they wanted to see more female artists nominated at the Grammy’s.

In her speech, Dua Lipa said, “Where I want to begin is by saying how honored I am to be nominated alongside so many incredible female artists this year because I guess this year we’ve really stepped up.” This year, women have bested Portnow and dominated in most major categories. Cardi B became the first solo woman to win Best Rap Album and H.E.R. was nominated five times and won two awards.

Now for a short bit of crazy, somebody wore a wall.
Joy Villa, a pro-Trump singer, wore a dress that was a wall. It was portrayed with her red “Make America Great Again” handbag. Yeah, some people do crazy things.
