Prince Harry of Wales got engaged, and it’s to Meghan Markle, an American TV and film actress. It’s not everyday that someone becomes royalty! Not to get too gossipy here, but the two were rumored to have been dating as early as October 2016, even before they went public in November. She was previously married to Trevor Engleson, from 2011 to 2013.
The engagement was announced on Tuesday, November 28 after an 18-month romance. The wedding is reportedly planned for the spring of next year. The couple’s past dates include going to the Invictus Games in Toronto in September and Botswana in October for Meghan’s birthday.
Meghan Markle has had a long, illustrious career already. She’s worked in many roles in TV and movies. Her most famous role was as Rachel Zane on Suits. She’s authored an online lifestyle brand, The Tig, and she’s also the global ambassador for her organization, World Vision Canada and she’s visited Rwandan refugee camps on behalf of UN Women.
She also published an article on her life as a mixed-race woman and her history with feminism in ELLE Magazine in 2015. She is a highly active feminist, empathetic social worker with a successful career as an actress, too!
Her husband has been a prince all his life, so that’s his history. He did serve in the Army for 10 years, though, since 2005, and he does have his Walking with the Wounded charity for supporting UK vets. That’s pretty good.
Apparently they’re pretty cute together! They appear to be very close, holding hands in public, linking arms, all that. They’re acting like a real couple.
Apparently, though, Harry has never seen Suits, so he’s got some catching up to do there. Pick up the slack, man.
Life is obviously going to be incredibly different for Meghan Markle. It probably won’t be as dramatic as the marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton, but of course, adjusting to royalty is going to be much different than just plain old regular fame.
I worry that, as a royal, her work as a political activist will have to get sidelined for some reason, like queenly duties or anything.
It’s important, when you have power, to wield it responsibly. I don’t doubt that Meghan Markle would at least try, but she is now surrounded by the most famous conservative family in England. Dickie Arbiter, the hilariously named former press secretary to Prince Charles, was quoted in an interview with The Guardian on this very subject: “What she was able to say before she came into ‘the firm’ is very different to what she is going to be able to say now. It all changes.”
That’s all conjecture, though. In the end, if you were to ask me what I think, I’m not really that interested. Hey, man, finals are coming right up, I’ve got a lot to do in a very short amount of time, I can’t really afford to get too excited about the fifth dude in the English royal line getting married.
Still, Meghan Markle seems like a good person, and I hope that she’s happy in her marriage, at least.
